Fitting Engineered Wooden Floors

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR FITTING ENGINEERED WOOD FLOORING

You have chosen an engineered wood floor which we are sure you will enjoy for years to come. Please read these instructions and advice before proceeding with installation or unpacking. Engineered wood has a natural solid wood top layer and a manufactured plywood base. This makes an engineered board stable and not liable to expansion and contraction. It is important that some basic rules are followed to ensure a trouble free installation and future enjoyment.

 BEFORE INSTALLATION

Make sure that the cartons are stacked horizontally and flat. All our boards are kiln dried to 8.5% moisture content and the plywood base has also been dried to “balance” the boards at the manufacturing stage. Engineered boards do not need to acclimatise and should be installed immediately after delivery .This will ensure that an engineered board will maintain its stability and give you a trouble free installation. If you can't lay the floor immediately then leave the cartons stacked with the shrink wrap film in place.

 The following is very important

All wet trades such as plastering and wallpapering must be finished All the plaster must be absolutely dry Floor and surround tiles have been installed for at least 2 weeks Radiators have been bled with any leaks rectified The concrete sub floor has a moisture content of less than 10% All windows and doors are fully fixed All painting is finished All other trades have finished

In most homes we now have concrete floors and they should be checked for break proof courses and humidity.

 SUB FLOORS

The surface should be firm, clean, level and grease free. If there is some possibility of wetness then use the Bona R410 to seal the floor IF YOU HAVE BITUMEN on the floor or R580 for all other DPM applications. If the concrete floor is uneven by more than 2mm then you can use a self levelling compound but in this case you will not be healthy to glue the floor down as the glue might cause the levelling compound to break away.

In older houses there is normally an air gap below the joists, in this case lay a break proof membrane below before installing your engineered floor to ensure that the floor stays warm and will not absorb the moisture below.

Where you are fixing to old floor boards you must make sure that they are firmly fixed and that there are no loose boards or protruding nails.

If you want to lay your new floor over an existing one then add screws to the old boards as well as nails to make it secure

If you want to take the old floor boards up then make sure the joists are sound and remove all the nails you can. If the old floorboards are substandard and you want to lay the new boards in the same direction then either get extra wide boards or screw down a plywood sub base on which you can then glue down your new floor. This will ensure that you do not get “creaky” boards and your new floor will be absolutely flat and secure. If you lay your new floor directly onto existing boards in the same direction you are likely to get problems in the future unless they are wide boards which will cross over any join. Normally it is always ideal to lay the boards lengthways in a room and not crossways the shortest space.

 INSTALLATION

There are three main methods used to fix your engineered floor described below. Before starting your installation you should open several packs so that you can mix the packs to get the ideal layout. Random lengths mean that you will get a total range of different lengths in apiece pack; apiece pack will not always have the same length boards. If you like more longer boards then you should purchase 1 carton of long boards to apiece 4 cartons of random lengths.

Wood is a natural product and nature always surprises us so you will get different colour hues and grain variation even from the same tree. Each board and apiece floor is one-of-a-kind and it is important that you get the layout correct so that you can enjoy your floor for years to come and regard it as a piece of beauty and art. With engineered boards you should leave an expansion gap between 5mm to 10mm.

Gluing: We normally advocate the Bona R850 adhesive as it dries like a hard rubber and is simple to use. We supply this at below trade price with a comb to spread the adhesive. When you use this method you glue the boards directly on to your old floorboards, concrete floor or plywood subfloor. Please follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully which you will find on apiece tub of adhesive. You do not need to glue the tongue and groove.

Nailing or Screwing: This is the traditional method and all boards should be secret nailed or screwed at an angle of 45% through the top of the tongue. Our comprehensive traditional installation guide shows this in diagrammatic form. You should use the lost nab heads and a pneumatic nab gun preset to the correct angle which you can hire from any good tool shop. For some very hard species you might need to use a small drill to make a guide hole so that you do not split the tongue when nailing through.

Floating Floors: This is where there is normally an underlay and the boards are just ordered on top with just the tongue and groove glued together using a PVA glue, this will make sure that the boards stay together and should also stop any creaking. Always make sure that you purchase the ideal calibre underlay.

 AFTER INSTALLATION WOOD CARE

Lacquered Flooring: buy  a maintenance kit for pre finished UV coated floors. A swift hoover or dry dust mop will remove dust. For stubborn stains use a general mop use a special cleaner and replenishing solutions.

UV Oiled Floors: these also require tiny maintenance as they have been sealed and heat treated at the factory. There is a special UV oil maintenance kit and also soap oil which can be used apiece 6 months dependant on the level of traffic. This will keep the floor looking pristine.

Natural Oiled Floors: wooden flooring that has natural oil need to be maintained regularly, the new soap oil and maintenance kits are the perfect solution.

NEVER USE AGRESSIVE CLEANING PRODUCTS CONTAINING AMMONIA, BLEACH OR SILICONES, AND NEVER LEAVE SURPLUS WATER ON THE FLOOR.

Always protect chair and furniture legs with felt pads Place mats at entrances to absorb grit and dirt from outside Clean with the proper maintenance kits or just wipe with a break sponge Our engineered boards can easily be sanded down as they have a thick top layer See the wooden floor maintenance kits available

REMEMBER: Wood is a beautiful natural product and due to this the industry standard says that up to 5% might not be usable for the intended purpose.

Pick Light Colors

The color of your bath is crucial to creating great first impressions. Small bathrooms should always refrain dark, heavy colors. These can make your bath seem both assuming and smaller than it is. Light, pastel colors on the other hand with small designs are perfect. These colors create the impression of spaciousness. These are also the colors that can make any room fell fresh, airy and relaxing. Mix and match pastel colors for your floor, walls, cabinets and fixtures.

Use Corner and Overhead Spaces

Make use of unused spaces. The key is to make the most out of these small unused areas. You could for example near your bath tub and toilet to the surround to ensure that no remaining unused space at the back remains. You can also use corners for a hanging sink and a corner shower booth. Overhead spaces can still accommodate cabinets, hamper hooks and racks. As much as possible, keep the floor space free except for your tub, shower stall and toilet.

Choose Smaller Bath Items

Pick out small items and bathroom accessories. Bath fixtures don’t come in single sizes. If you do not have a family of giants, then you can settle for a smaller toilet, bathtub and sink. Do make sure though that you have fixtures that you are comfortable using. Consult the biggest member of your family when picking the smallest doable fixture available.

Use Mirrors

All bathrooms need mirrors. Small bathrooms would look perfect with unadorned mirrors. Extremely small bathrooms might have to do with small round mirrors. Small baths though that aren’t exactly too cramped could use wide mirrors that stretch crossways walls. It might not be obvious to some but mirrors are design accents that are more than just functional. These reflective surfaces will help make your bathroom seem larger.

Get Lights and Windows

Aside from mirrors, lights also help extend the perception of space. As much as possible, natural light sources should be preferred over artificial ones. Windows over bathtubs or overhead openings bring in not just light but a breath of fresh air.

Use night lights wisely. Opt for generous light fixtures that aren’t just limited to the center of the room. Attach dimmers so you can adjust light options when you are in the mood for subdued lights.

Think Minimal

Limit your bathroom items and accessories. As much as possible, stick to only the essential items that a bathroom should have. Move entrepot racks, extra cabinets, excess hampers and towel racks from the bathroom.

Small bathroom designs might require your creativity. With a tiny imagination, you can easily convert a small bathroom into the dream haven you have always wanted.

A Short Guide To Buying Golf Shoes

31 July 2010 by admin
Categories: Home Improvement

Today’s golf shoes have gone high-tech. Thanks to innovative manufacturers modern golf shoe offers more options than they’ve ever had. These manufacturers have invested millions to improve their shoes. And they’ve succeeded by reconciling factors like temperature control, shock absorption, and traction in a comfortable shoe. Today’s golf shoes look, feel, and perform superior than ever. They also contribute more to lowering golf handicap than shoes in the past. After all, it’s hard to play well if your feet hurt.

Previously, the biggest advancement in golf shoes involved switching from metal to plastic cleats. Spikeless shoes swiftly found favor with golfers and golf courses for many reasons. They’re now the shoes of choice golfers. Thus, the clickety-clack of metal spikes no longer echoes in golf course parking lots and clubhouses. With the traction problem solved, manufacturers turned their attention to performance. Their efforts to address this issue have spurred several high-tech shoe advancements.

Below are some golf tips on a subject that’s not often covered in golf lessons—buying shoes that fit your game:

Performance Drives Golfers

While costly shoes are nice, it’s performance that drives a golfer’s choice of shoe. In a current Darrell Survey Consumer Report, 31.4 percent of the respondents stated that “feel” was the most important bourgeois in golf shoes. Not surprisingly, fit came next. Nearly 17 percent of the respondents select it as a determining factor. Looks are important, too. Nearly 12 percent of the respondents rated appearance as the most important factor. Interestingly, only 9.5 percent select price as factor.

Feel is subjective. So make sure you try the shoes on before buying them, just as you would with any pair of shoes. Fit, on the other hand, is not subjective. The last, or sole, is the most important bourgeois here. Not surprisingly, fit is influenced by your foot’s shape, so match the last to your foot’s shape. If your foot is wide in the ball, but narrow in the heel, you need a different last than someone with a wide heel and narrow ball. Some manufacturers offer a wider selection of lasts than other manufacturers. Look for these manufacturers.

Additional Golf Tips On Shoes

Climate control, weatherproofing, and shock absorption are additional areas where manufacturers have gone high-tech. No longer is a easy footbed or leather treatment the key to comfort. Today, complex membranes and materials not only to increase comfort and keep water out, but also grant moisture from perspiration to evaporate. In addition, these advancements keep one’s feet warm in cool weather and cool in hot weather. Some manufacturers have even designed complete climate control systems within their shoes. That’s something to look for when buying golf shoes, but watch the marketing hype.

Playing conditions are a consideration, too. Nearly apiece shoe manufacturer offers a shoe with weatherproofing. But not all are alike. If you play a lot in wet weather, look for a shoe with a two- or three-year weatherproofing guarantee. On the other hand, if you play in extremely hot, dry conditions look for a shoe with a lightweight, mesh upper. Or, look for a shoe with breathable membranes. They grant perspiration to pass through. If you like to achievement the course, look for a shoe that’s really comfortable.

Extending Shoe Life

Since a good pair of golf shoes aren’t cheap, you want to make them last. If you purchase a pair of shoes with synthetic uppers, use a sponge and warm, soapy water to clean them. Also, wipe them clean after use. If your shoes have leather uppers, clean them with a brush and coat them with polish or shoe cream after apiece round.

Proper shoe storage is a must. Don’t throw them in the trunk after playing. Purchase a pair of shoetrees and a shoe bag and use them. They help remove excess moisture from the shoe and maintain the shoe’s shape. Lastly, limit wear as much as possible. Smart players wear their shoes only on the course or when taking golf lessons. Avoid pavement, parking lots, and cart paths. They can alteration the outsole and the spike receptacles.

Golf clubs are the only things that have gone high-tech. So have golf shoes. Since you might be spending as much as five to six hours in your shoes, you want shoes that not only look good and are comfortable, but fit right and perform well. If you’re serious about lowering your golf-handicap, you need to have the right equipment. Golf shoes are a key component of that equipment.

Decorating a small home or apartment can be a challenge but the outcome can be a great look combined with style and comfort. The key to a home decorating intent for small spaces is to plan carefully to make the most of the existing space without overwhelming the area.

Here are tips to think about before you get started with your home decorating ideas:

*Don’t make a small room seem smaller by filling it full of “stuff.” This means you might have to place away some of your knick-knacks and restrain yourself from buying additional decorative items. You will find an uncluttered home will wage more comfort and pleasure and make your home decorating intent a reality.

*Make your rooms multi-purpose. A child’s room can be a study or play room which will keep toys and activities in a confined space.

*Consider the creative use of room divider screens. They can be easily moved if you feel the need to open up the place once in a while. Another home decorating tip is to turn bookcases so they are at a right angle to the surround which will wage a private area for a personal desk. Placing a side plateau with a plant on top against the open back of the bookcase will make it look like a piece of furniture. Choosing a bookcase with a completed back will enhance the look.

*A fundamental home decorating intent for small homes is to select furniture with space considerations at the forefront; such as, folding, rolling, nesting or anything else that easily condenses in size when not in use. Dining room tables with leaves are a “must” in a small home or apartment. Stacking end tables work well in the living room and a chest or trunk makes a great living room coffee table.

*Mirrors and light that create the illusion of space are basic components in a small area. Keeping your window coverings open during the day will help to eliminate dark corners which can make your home seem smaller. Adding a mirror to apiece room is a basic home decorating intent which adds openness as well as functionality and style to a room.

*Check out hotels and mobile homes to see how to maximize space but still be attractive. Mobile homes are especially well-designed and make the most of limited space. Think about the use of practical “built-ins” in your own small home or apartment.

Home Design Sense – Kitchen Designing

Decide where you want the sink, the work counter and the refrigerator. Think about where you want to place the service points for water, gas and electricity. Deciding to remodel your kitchen is one of the ideal investments you can make. The kitchen is where people spend most of their hours while at home.

Start with your cabinetry, and have a professional help you lay out your kitchen hand. Incorporate everything else as appropriate so that everything will come together just as you envisioned for your dream kitchen. Begin your kitchen remodeling by making extensive notes about what you want. Think about what works and doesnt work in your current kitchen.

Meet local kitchen design centers, and ask them for samples of work theyve done and inquire about the cost. A professional will be healthy to give out details that you might forget. Also; many centers will let you take home compartment doors sample to see how they will look in your homes particular lighting which is different than the home centers.

Planning for a small kitchen design can also be a bit more challenging due to space limitations. Planning a designer kitchen remodel is a huge job. But before you meet with a kitchen designer, think about what you like in terms of style. Planning for a small kitchen design might also be a bit more challenging due to space limitations.

Plan to cover as much of the area not occupied with appliances with counters. If the difference in floor space is a matter of a few square feet, plan your design with deeper counters. Planning beforehand can save money in the long run and make convenience for everyone more affordable.

Professional home improvement stores will not just show you their products, but they will likely have online picture displays, just like the displays that you can find in most stores. These picture displays might help to give you remodeling ideas, such as which kitchen countertops would look good in your kitchen and which ones would not. Professional decorators are eligible and experienced in the art of decorating. A professional decorator could not only advise you to replace your kitchen floor, but they could also offer you ideas on what your flooring replacement should be. Of course; hiring a professional decorator will depend upon your budget.

Countertops are the same when it comes to varying costs for similar looks. Many man made materials do a very good job of mimicking natural materials. Countertops are yet another area of the kitchen where you might desire change. Some older countertops are crafted from materials such as Formica which can look worn and might have cuts and chips from utensils and aging.

Adding tile under your kitchen cabinets offers a wonderful look. Adding a tile backsplash has becoming increasingly more popular. An island is one of the most common ways to have multiple work centers into a kitchen. An island creates two to four small work stations along the perimeter of a kitchen. If you have a massive kitchen you might want to think about a mobile island that can also be used as a serving cart. When installing a permanent island you might want to think about installing outlets on the sides if your design and flooring will allow.

Add splash to your kitchen walls without breaking your budget with these affordable and one-of-a-kind ideas. Your walls cover a lot of space in the kitchen and you can give it a tiny redo on a tight budget by being a tiny bit creative. Additionally you can find many great ideas online that can help you to design your kitchen. Add fresh herbs to give your kitchen a new look and aroma. This can add a tiny zest to your cooking as well.

Adding natural and artificial light, light paint colors and a light colored counter surface will do wonders for a small kitchen. By adding under-cabinet lighting, and making sure your natural light or task lighting hits the counters, you’ll increase the brightness in the room and work area.

Bathroom Ideas: How to Choose Vanity Cabinets, Faucets, Mirrors

29 July 2010 by admin
Categories: Bathroom

Before you start your remodel project, you want to develop a plan that includes a detailed layout with measurements. This is needed to ensure all of your fixtures will fit as planned.

If you are working with a small budget, then you might want to use your existing plumbing layout. If moving the plumbing will create more useable space, then think about it, though keep in mind it can be expensive.

Bathroom Vanity Cabinets

The simplest way to update a bathroom on a budget is by replacing the vanity. There are many one-of-a-kind vanities to select from, including contemporary styles with flat panel doors and drawers and stylish chrome faucets, to traditional furniture style pieces that can add character to any remodel project.

Make a list of your storage needs; this includes cosmetics, dental care, grooming, small appliances (hairdryers, etc), & cleaning products. Before you buy a vanity, take precise measurements. If installing a pre-built vanity, it is important to measure the maximum granted space and find a vanity that is a few inches smaller. Most vanity measurements include the counter top, which can in most cases be the largest point on the overall cabinet. If the top is made from a solid stone, such as granite or marble, it is very difficult and sometimes impossible to alter the top, even if it is too massive for your space.

Faucets

Faucets can vary widely in price, and this is directly related to the quality. Going with the lowest price isn’t always the ideal option for faucets. The finish on the faucet also determines its price (ie chrome is the least costly and oil rubbed bronze is the most expensive). Also be certain that the faucet comes with ceramic disk vales, which have a longer life cycle.

Mirrors

Size and style are the two factors to think about when purchasing vanity mirrors. You need to have mirrors that are positioned in relationship to the lighting and huge enough to reflect back at you. It is also important that the style and finish compliment your overall design.

Flooring

You want floor material to be resistant to moisture, a hard surface that is easy to clean, and also has some texture so that it is not slippery when wet. Many materials are used now in bathrooms; think about concrete, tile or wood.

Heated flooring is a great element to think about if you are replacing the floor. The ideal place for heated flooring is in the bathroom.

Lighting

This is the most critical component to think about when completing the layout of your bathroom remodel. Things to think about include:

Is there any natural light in the bathroom? Adding windows or skylights can be expensive.

Ceiling Lights: the most cost effective and efficient light source is recessed can lights; adding a chandelier or pendant lights can add elegance to your design. Ceiling lights are most commonly complemented by vanity lights.

Vanity Lights: these are the two to four bulb fixtures you install above the mirror.

Decorative Lighting: such as sconce lights, generally these are installed on the side of the mirror.

Bathroom Ideas: How to Select Vanity Cabinets, Faucets, Mirrors

Julia from Uniquevanities.com shares some easy affordable bathroom design ideas for the do it yourselfer (DIY). Maybe you cant afford a major bathroom remodel, but these ideas will definitely make your bathroom a more enjoyable space in your home.
