Keep Small Bathroom Remodel Simple

Categories: Bathroom

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make when remodeling a small bathroom is trying to cram in everything they’d like to place in a huge bathroom. The second mistake is choosing fixtures, decorative items, and the like that are too bulky or too ornate. Choosing clean easy lines, without a lot of decoration, will make the space look larger.
One way to approach a small bathroom remodel, then, is to keep it simple. Sometimes less is more; and this is true of small bathrooms. If you are trying to create an elegant and luxurious bathroom don’t forget about understated elegance.

Starting with the huge things, here are some tips to help you with your small bathroom remodel:
Choose only a compact shower stall or only a whirlpool or spa tub that is smaller and deeper (this will fit nicely in a corner). Even some of the tub designs now being advertised for seniors would work in a small bathroom.
Choose a pedestal sink or a surround mounted sink. This will leave more floor space and make the room feel bigger.
Choose the most compact toilet you can find. Select a taller model over a shorter wider style.

Now for decorative items:

* Select a mirror with no frame or a mirror with a small frame — this will make the room look larger and the mirror will reflect light farther in the room.
* Cover an entire surround with a mirror — this will create the appearance of a much larger space.
* Use fewer wall-mounted towel rods or rings — select a ring beside the sink to save space.
* Store extra linens nearby, but place out only a minimum at any one time.
* Place light fixtures where they will reflect light throughout the room.
* If you don’t have a window, think about installing a tube light to bring in sunlight.
* Find creative ways to add storage in walls.

Decorating ideas:

* Select lighter and brighter colors.
* Use glass block windows or frosted windows instead of curtains — it will make the room look larger.
* Use cover or paint design that draws the eye upward to make the room appear larger — either vertical stripes, vertical designs, or a border at the top of the wall.
* Use small shelves above and under sinks, toilets, etc. to wage storage and decoration.
* Keep color combinations minimalist — no more than two colors.
* Avoid clutter — don’t set decorative items around that are not necessary.
* Add luxuries in ways that do not use more of your space (massaging shower heads, spa tub, radiant floor heating, fogless mirrors, heated towel rods, fragrances, etc.)

In small spaces, simplicity is generally ideal if you want to create a feeling of spaciousness and elegance. Clean easy lines, lots of light, no clutter, and an eye to the necessary will help you create a very comfortable and luxurious small bathroom remodel.

Small Bathroom Lighting

31 August 2010 by admin
Categories: Bathroom

Small bathrooms might be those added under a stairway or in a spare closet. They might be for children, adults, or both. A small bathroom might be a guest powder room off the foyer or living room. One thing they have in common is that they are – small. Another thing they have in common is that they call for special lighting.

Small bathroom lighting is dependent, in part, on the use of the bathroom. One type of bathroom light fixture might convey a warm, cozy feeling for dinner guests. Another type of bathroom light fixture might make the small bathroom seem spacious – or wage light for reading while resting in a deep soak tub.

Warm and Cozy Lighting

You can make a small bathroom feel warm and cozy rather than claustrophobic by adding the right light fixtures. Suppose this is a small half-bath meant primarily for guests to “freshen up” before dinner. You’ve used small-patterned deep red and gold cover for warmth. What kind of light fixtures should this small bathroom have?

Try recessed, can ceiling light fixtures focused on work areas. Or use indirect lighting around the perimeter of the ceiling-wall junction. On either side of the mirror above the sink, add a surround sconce light fixture. Avoid massive surround sconces, or those that deform too far from the wall, as they will make the room look cluttered. Layering these two types of light fixture will give you warm, gracious lighting in a small bathroom for guests.

Bright Enough for Reading

If the small bathroom in your home has a soaking tub, or one used by children, you will want good lighting in the tub area. Most lighting above tubs and showers is diffuse lighting, which is fine for a swift shower or bath. Diffuse lighting is also good over-all lighting to soften the entire bathroom. However, if you want to read – or get paint off of a child – you might want brighter, more concentrated lighting. Use a focused flood or halogen light fixture on the surround above the tub.

Choose safe, moisture proof light fixtures for this area. “Make sure that your lamps are UL rated for break locations insuring safety,” states Todd Phillips, president of lighting manufacturer Quoizel.

Space Enlarging Lighting

You can never have too much light in a small bathroom, as long as you use it properly. Perhaps the ideal intent for small bathrooms is to start with indirect lighting around the ceiling for overall softness and warmness. Then think about these possibilities.

1. If your small bathroom has a window, use light-admitting, sheer curtains at the window. Add a shade that can be drawn for privacy.

2. Light shower or tub with separate wet area light fixtures, strong enough to permit simple individualized grooming, but with dimmer switches for atmosphere.

3. On either side of the vanity mirror, use warm fluorescent vertical surround sconces to wage even facial illumination. Place a halogen light above the mirror for cross illumination. Place these mirror surrounding light fixtures on a separate switch.

4. Run a linear light fixture along the vanity toe-space to wage a soft night light.

5. For a family use small bathroom, place a halogen or flood light near the toilet, focused as a good reading light. Install a separate switch.

With all of these light fixtures layered in a small bathroom, you will always have exactly the amount of light you need for any given task. Yet you can make it cozy with dimmer switches, innocuous with night lights.

Helpful Tip

Small bathroom lighting need not be garish or insufficient. You can have plenty of light or cozy lighting if you layer your light, and control it with separate and/or dimmer switches.

Green Bathroom Ideas

The newest style of bathroom remodeling is the green bathroom. Green bathrooms not only help to save the environment but also help so save the owner money in the long run. This article can help give you some green ideas when it comes to bathroom remodeling.

Using natural light is the easiest way to begin your green design. If you have the option skylights are the ideal way to light your bathroom. Letting in natural light not only gives you bathroom a friendlier brighter feel but also eliminates the need for electric lighting. If skylights aren’t an option replacing bathroom windows with larger ones can also drastically help the lighting of your bath. When it comes time to plan the actual electric lighting aspect of your bathroom look into low voltage led lighting as an substitute to the conventional bathroom lighting. Installing timer switches is also a great way to ensure you save energy.

Another great way to save money is to switch from a hot water tank to a solar hot water tank of an inline heater. A solar hot water heater uses energy from the sun to heat your water saving energy and money. With the cost of these units starting around 00 dollars these are a great investment. The inline water heater gives you hot water on demand giving the added bonus of never being healthy to run out of hot water. Either of these alternatives are superior for the environment then the standard hot water tank.

There are a number of ways to help save water when it comes to your bathroom. Automated faucets save water by automatically turning themselves off after a certain amount of time. They are turned one by either a motion censor or near button, these are a must have if you have young children. Water saving shower heads can also cut your water usage down significantly. In the past water saving shower heads ruined water pressure and drizzled out water making them detested by many; however today’s water saving shower heads conserve water while still giving decent pressure.

Another great way to save water in your bathroom is through the use of water saving toilets. There are a wide variety of models on the market to select from the most favourite being the 1.6 congius flush. These 1.6 congius flush toilets are becoming somewhat out dated though. There are now 1 congius single flush toilets that are just as effective as the 1.6. There are also dual flush toilets on the market. These have a .08 congius flush and a 1.6 congius flush. They have been know to save a family of four over 10,000 gallons of water a year when compared to a conventional toilet. Pressurized toilets are another type of water saving toilet that has become more favourite in current years. There have also been great improvements in the designs of these toilets. They used a pressurized air tank to assist the flushing of the toilet allowing for a lower volume of water.

Saving water isn’t thing that makes a bathroom green. Buying recycled building materials is also part of designing a green bathroom. There are many types of bathroom vanities that are made from recycled glass that have an ultra modern look to them. There are also a variety of tiles on the market that are made from recycled material. Buying recycled building materials can help save you money and the environment at the same time.

No matter how serious your bathroom remodeling project is there are simple tiny ways to make your bathroom and home a tiny more energy efficient. These were just a few bathroom remodeling ideas to help you help the environment.

Bathroom Ideas, Including Bathroom Design Ideas for Beautiful Bathrooms

17 August 2010 by admin
Categories: Bathroom

Here are the ideal bathroom decoration ideas for your bathroom makeover project! Decorating bathrooms has never been easier, read on to find out how.

First, be sure to determine your overall budget and the scope of the project before doing anything else. This will eliminate additional stress and frustration as your bathroom makeover project is underway.

Once you have determined your overall project and budget, it is time to begin formulating your color and style palette, utilizing the bathroom decorating ideas and plans you might have been thinking about. Is there a defined decorating style in the rest of your home that will be carried through to the bathroom decorating project? It’s a good intent to be consistent with the style you have set for other areas of your home, even though in a bathroom you can ‘go down a different road’ as long as the basic design elements are kept consistent.

The same question applies to the color palette. Have you established a color palette of three to five colors in your home? If you have, choose at least two of those colors, whether primary or secondary, to use in your bathroom decorating project.

If you’re not sure what to do with color, here is a suggestion. Find a reputable paint store and work with the recommended palettes and color chips. There are many to choose from, so if you have a color or two that you are working with, you will have no problem finding a variety of recommended color palettes.

Now that you have your style and color choices narrowed down, here are your other considerations and bathroom decoration ideas:

1. Decide if you want to use bold colors on the walls or keep them neutral and use color as an accent. In most bathrooms you can go either way. If you are renting your home or are not sure about putting a lot of color on the walls, stick with a neutral shade and you won’t go wrong. Use a washable paint such as eggshell or possibly a semi gloss, even though you will get quite a bit of sheen with that finish.

2. Lighting is important in the bathroom for obvious reasons. Make sure you have enough and that at least one light is bright. Using a softer light such as a small lamp in place of a nightlight is great, but make sure your substitute sources of lighting are nice and bright!

3. You can substantially change the look of your bathroom with accessories, so here are some great bathroom decoration ideas – use some or all of them!

Change the mirror to create a new look. If the existing mirror is square or rectangular, think about oval if that will work in your bathroom. Use a mirror that has an interesting frame instead of just a plain or beveled edge.

If the woodworking is staying, change the hardware and choose something that you can coordinate with the towel holders, for example. This will create a pulled together, designer look. If your decor style is Shabby Chic or French Country, you might want to paint the cabinets.

Shop for accessories that have the color palette and overall design feel you are creating, but please don’t settle for the matching set of anything! You know, the toothbrush holder, soap dish, shower curtain and small wastebasket that have the same palm tree on them??? Don’t do it! Spend a tiny extra time looking for individual pieces that ‘click’, but don’t match. And, they don’t have to be new. You might find something awesome in another room of your home, a flea market, shopping online or a combination of all three. Take your time and be selective – you will be glad you did.

Think about storage for your bathroom makeover. If you have a linen closet, that’s great. If not, look for creative ways to store your towels, etc. I have used a nightstand from a bedroom set in the bath and it was great – The lower compartment was great for supplies, and I stored makeup and such in the top drawer.

Finally, remember that country is always at the forefront in the bathroom. Put rugs on the floor that are non-slip. You can find many great selections at any number of stores depending on your budget. Think twice about using glass jars, etc in the bath if there are small kids that will be using the bathroom.

Bathroom design can be fun and simple. All you need to do is decide what you want to change or modify and have it done – or do-it-yourself.

Sinks can add an astounding value and convenience to any small bathroom. You can find many wonderful ideas by looking online ad different plumbing supply companies. Sinks, stools, showers and baths can make a huge difference. In the remodel I mentioned above we used a rounded shower with glass doors to increase spatial perception. Sinks can add an astounding value and convenience to any small bathroom. You can find many wonderful ideas by looking online ad different plumbing supply companies.

Installing marble countertops is a nice touch, and adding radiant floor heating will keep your feet warm and cozy, heat the room for when you get out of the shower, and helps wet floors dry faster. For a relaxed, soothing quiet time, a steam bath/shower or customized spa shower with multiple water jets will rejuvenate your body and soul. Installing new faucets and all accessories in both the kitchen and bathroom can make a significant difference. These days there are plenty of modern faucet designs that can help update and freshen up a kitchen or bathroom.

Natural light will help to uplift and energize your room. There are currently many choices when it comes to changing the color of your bathroom. Natural light can be very uplifting in its effect on how you feel.

Tile is one of the ideal things you can place in the bathrooms and if you purchase a neutral shade can last you for a really long time. It also doesn’t get worn out as much as some other materials. Tiles used for the walls are simple to clean and can resist stains. From the ceiling down can use a light code because you will not have stains or moisture except around the stove where the steam might reach the upper heights. Tile adds a look of elegance to a bathroom that is not captured with vinyl or Linoleum flooring materials.

Accessorize by as a good deal mirror as the bath will handle, painting a stencil on the largest surround (if this reflects in the mirror each one the better) otherwise perhaps a painting of a spacious outdoor scene. Each one of these ideas will help donate a feeling of spaciousness. Accessories are also important when you are considering bathroom remodeling ideas. Depending on the size of your bathroom a massive mirror can be both functional as well as practical in terms of adding to the appearance of the room.

Plush rugs, thick towels, and other accessories make your bathroom experience a pleasant one. Plus any stains will be magnified on it.

Imagine how gorgeous plush hand towels will look tucked into an antique chest! Envision taking a soothing bath or shower on a crisp winter evening. What is worse than stepping out of that warm paradise onto a cold floor? Envision how much fun a Walt Disney theme can be in your children’s bathroom or a romantic theme in the master bathroom. If you’ve really got a gift for thinking creatively, there is no end to the many bathroom remodeling ideas that you can come up with.

Imagine your bathroom being used for relaxing, as well as pampering yourself after a long, tiring day. Think about your home a work in progress and have fun doing it.

Coming up with bathroom designs that makes your bathroom seem larger and more spacious is do-able.

There are a number of ways that a mortal can use to make their small bathroom seem larger without having to undertake a potentially expensive, time consuming, pain-in-the-rear, remodeling and construction project.

Be adventurous if you want to. Come up one-of-a-kind bathroom designs to please your own eye.

With your new bathroom design you might even want to treat the powder room to a more adventurous look than in the rest of your home, indulging in lavish tile work, vividly colored wall-covering, ornate mirrors, or a one-of-a-kind style of sinks and fixtures.  Maybe decorate the room to resemble an aquarium or even a desert scene.

Make the room look larger

Choosing light soft colors can make your bathroom look larger and more spacious. On the other hand dark and bold colors make the bathroom appear smaller and more intimate.

If you wish to use cover use subtle designs and refrain massive prints and busy patterns.

Light colors for the flooring will help make the room appear roomier and more open.  The most favourite colors for a light bathroom floor are tans, light grays, and light blues.  In the same way, additional lighting helps to open up small spaces.  Think about adding some light fixtures or using larger wattage bulbs if appropriate.

Adding a window or a skylight can work wonders, even making a window larger could make a massive difference.

When selecting fixtures for your new bathroom design, keep in mind they are going into a small space. Select simple designs made from smooth surfaces, such as ceramic and marble, and opt for light, neutral tones.

Another way to make a bathroom appear larger is to replace a massive vanity or countertop with a slimmer, pedestal sink.  Pedestal sinks come in many different styles, colors, and materials, making it simple to match any décor.  Placing a pedestal sink in the bathroom can open up the space by as much as ten percent.

In many cases greatly reducing the number of items stored the bathroom can really make a difference.  Storage shelves, hampers, and decorative items take up valuable space.  The bathroom will appear much larger if these items are removed.  Think about putting laundry hampers in the bedrooms instead of in the bathroom.

Add mirrors to your design

Adding more mirrors to the bathroom designs can help the room to appear bigger.  Placing additional mirrors in the bathroom will help to capture all of the acquirable light and reflect it back into the room to make it brighter, and can add depth to the room, as the mirrors reflect apiece other and make the walls look farther away.

Replace your old toilet with a new trendy one-piece toilet that has a cleaner look and is also much more compact than your standard two-piece toilet. Any bathroom project, huge or small, will benefit from careful planning. Take some time to think about these practical points before you begin.

Add fast hot water to your bathroom design!

While you are remodeling or re-decorating is a perfect time to supercharge your water heater with a hot water demand pump and appliance!  At the touch of a button the hot water demand pump speeds hot water from your water heater to your bathroom fixtures without running any water down the drain

A hot water demand system is a small affordable pump you install under you sink.  When you want hot water you simply press the button, and the hot water is pumped at up to double the normal speed to your fixture, without running any water down the drain. You save time and you save thousands of gallons of water apiece year.

Ideas for Small Bathroom Designs

Homeowners need not stress over small bathroom designs. Even though the space element might be limited, there are several creative ways to maximize what you have. Here are some top ideas for small bathrooms.

Pick Light Colors

The color of your bath is crucial to creating great first impressions. Small bathrooms should always refrain dark, heavy colors. These can make your bath seem both assuming and smaller than it is. Light, pastel colors on the other hand with small designs are perfect. These colors create the impression of spaciousness. These are also the colors that can make any room fell fresh, airy and relaxing. Mix and match pastel colors for your floor, walls, cabinets and fixtures.

Use Corner and Overhead Spaces

Make use of unused spaces. The key is to make the most out of these small unused areas. You could for example near your bath tub and toilet to the surround to ensure that no remaining unused space at the back remains. You can also use corners for a hanging sink and a corner shower booth. Overhead spaces can still accommodate cabinets, hamper hooks and racks. As much as possible, keep the floor space free except for your tub, shower stall and toilet.

Choose Smaller Bath Items

Pick out small items and bathroom accessories. Bath fixtures don’t come in single sizes. If you do not have a family of giants, then you can settle for a smaller toilet, bathtub and sink. Do make sure though that you have fixtures that you are comfortable using. Consult the biggest member of your family when picking the smallest doable fixture available.

Use Mirrors

All bathrooms need mirrors. Small bathrooms would look perfect with unadorned mirrors. Extremely small bathrooms might have to do with small round mirrors. Small baths though that aren’t exactly too cramped could use wide mirrors that stretch crossways walls. It might not be obvious to some but mirrors are design accents that are more than just functional. These reflective surfaces will help make your bathroom seem larger.

Get Lights and Windows

Aside from mirrors, lights also help extend the perception of space. As much as possible, natural light sources should be preferred over artificial ones. Windows over bathtubs or overhead openings bring in not just light but a breath of fresh air.

Use night lights wisely. Opt for generous light fixtures that aren’t just limited to the center of the room. Attach dimmers so you can adjust light options when you are in the mood for subdued lights.

Think Minimal

Limit your bathroom items and accessories. As much as possible, stick to only the essential items that a bathroom should have. Move entrepot racks, extra cabinets, excess hampers and towel racks from the bathroom.

Small bathroom designs might require your creativity. With a tiny imagination, you can easily convert a small bathroom into the dream haven you have always wanted.

Your bathroom is used each single day. Because of that it really should look as good as it possibly can. People, however, often neglect the bathroom because it’s a functional room tucked away in the corner of most homes. Even your bathroom deserves to be decorated so why not spruce up your bathroom with some of these ideas?

When designing or decorating a bathroom keep it simple.

Hardware choices should be the primary concern when designing a bathroom. Faucets, tubs and toilets are produced in a variety of shapes and materials can centerpiece a design. Open showers are currently favourite and claw-foot bathtubs are nearly always considered to be classic and attractive. Evaluate your privacy issues and don’t place the toilet and tub too close together unless they are separated by a solid (non-glass) wall.

Can you theme decorate a bathroom? Of course. Look through magazines and books at your library to get inspiration and ideas. Keep in mind that “less is more” while choosing a decoration pattern that will coordinate with the rest of the home.

You can find color schemes in artwork that you will want to display. Look at the colors in the artwork and select the ones that appeal to you. Then go to your home store and look at the color swatches. Take them home to see the color in the existing light in your bathroom before purchasing the paint.

Shop around when looking for tile. There are many to select from, so take your time. You should visit several tile shops and learn as much as doable about the tile. Take notes. Compare your notes and you will be healthy to make a knowledgeable decision about which tile will work ideal for your specific needs.

After the design and production of a space-conscious and captivating bathroom have been completed, focus on the accessories to bring out your personality and theme.

Bathrooms use a lot of water so beach and ocean themes are often favourite for these rooms. Beach themes can be a whole lot of fun. You could begin by painting the room peach or bright blue and then add several sea shells or similar accessories. Any furniture in the bathroom should be wicker or whitewashed wooden pieces to add to the natural “driftwood” feeling. Any ocean theme will require the use of pale green or blue paint colors to properly convey the feeling of the sea. Again whitewashed or dark wood grained furnishings really complement this style of room.

If neither ocean nor beach themes feel right to you then you could think about a tropical decorating style for your bathroom. Tan and jungle green are great choices for this particular theme. A few touches of red can really add some spark to the room afterwards. Rattan furniture always looks great in tropical style bathrooms and a sisal rug is also the perfect replacement for the traditional bathroom rug.

What about an Italian style bathroom? This particular theme is rich and luxurious and perfect for bathrooms with a spa or soaking tub. Most Italian themes also use mosaics, which look great in any shower. If designing an Italian style bathroom then use gold, deep blue or red colors in your paint scheme for maximum effect.

Last but not least is the country decorating theme. This is a nice relaxed theme. Strong country colors are red, green, blue, yellow or tan. You can dress up your bathroom with French accessories or dress it down with some rustic elements. Pine furniture works ideal with this particular style.

Once you see the finished bathroom you won’t believe it took you so long to decide to redecorate the room. After all, most people begin their day in the bathroom, so why not begin off right.
