Kitchen Design and Style – Tips to get That Inspired Look

6 September 2010 by admin

Modern kitchens might be efficiently kitted out and look seamlessly well designed with nice materials fixtures and finishes – but demand any personality, and thus don’t fulfill their new role as the epicenter of socialising in the home.

Whatever the style – Gothic, Punk, Eclectic, 50′s American retro, Victoriana or Bauhaus -  design  influences  of  the current and more distant past are the eventual source for inspiration in giving your home and kitchen design that memorable touch, whether you are refitting or accessorising.

I recently visited a successful designer friend’s home recently, who has a very impressive kitchen extension on an equally impressive 19th century house.

It wasn’t the scale and the impressive skylights that gave made the space memorable and individual, but the clever selected touches from the past both classic and quirky; the 1970s ceiling light tracking system, the 1960s influenced furniture, the 1800′s kitchen enamel pots, and the 1980′s surround graphics.

Here are six tips to help you give you a flavour of the possibilities to achieve your own equally individual, memorable look and feel.

Make your walls talk.

Wall graphics are the easiest way to bring life to and unify a space, especially if you have massive white or light coloured surround areas. It is good to move and re hang the photos each so often to re energise the space.

Image content can enhance your design theme, a modern kitchen can have nonfigurative paintings a traditional one antique food engravings or maps, or be in direct contrast – gothic frames and imagery can look good in a slick white environment. It is always ideal to get original content by artist where doable or print it out and frame it yourself.

Victorian secrets.

The Victorian era is one of my favourite periods, where decorative influences came from far and wide, Chinese willow pattern plates and prints, Middle Eastern rugs, glam lamps and chandeliers -a great source for your inspiration and also the unexpected. Combine the decadent with the functional.

The Appliance of Science.

Retro design influenced kitchen appliances -from American style fridge freezers to the humble toaster are now huge business, as tastes becomes more eclectic.

Kitchen ware product design and gadgetry has become as sophisticated as automobile design and similarly uses upgraded and hybrid versions of retro forms and styles.

The use of colour and materials  are constantly being reinvented and becoming ever more exciting, with Scandinavian designers taking over from the Italian classics of yesteryear.

- so it’s worth investing some time, effort in getting the look of your appliances right.

Illuminate your approach.

Kitchen are leaving behind the old look of fixed ceiling mounted spotlights. Candelabras, hanging lights, lamp shades are all making a comeback, and all add theatre and flexibility to the lighting mood and level of the space.

At the other extreme,  a custom built neon sign, hand made to suit -whether a word or motif – can add real excitement and expression to a room.

Ideas in store.

Original old enamel storage bins, old branded tins, sweet jars and anything glass are all great touches to add to your work surface of shelves. Good flea markets are full of interesting branded ephemera.

Time to make a statement.

No self respecting kitchen should be without a good surround clock, as mobile phones have replaced the need for clocks in public places, they are becoming ever more a rarity.

You can either make it a focal statement or use one to enliven a ‘quiet area’ we have an old railway station clock in our utility room.

My favourite though, is the cuckoo clock, you can either get an Alpine original or one of the mythologic new versions now on the market.

So remember to refrain the overly bespoke look and discover your design passions from the past.

Keep Small Bathroom Remodel Simple

4 September 2010 by admin

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make when remodeling a small bathroom is trying to cram in everything they’d like to place in a huge bathroom. The second mistake is choosing fixtures, decorative items, and the like that are too bulky or too ornate. Choosing clean easy lines, without a lot of decoration, will make the space look larger.
One way to approach a small bathroom remodel, then, is to keep it simple. Sometimes less is more; and this is true of small bathrooms. If you are trying to create an elegant and luxurious bathroom don’t forget about understated elegance.

Starting with the huge things, here are some tips to help you with your small bathroom remodel:
Choose only a compact shower stall or only a whirlpool or spa tub that is smaller and deeper (this will fit nicely in a corner). Even some of the tub designs now being advertised for seniors would work in a small bathroom.
Choose a pedestal sink or a surround mounted sink. This will leave more floor space and make the room feel bigger.
Choose the most compact toilet you can find. Select a taller model over a shorter wider style.

Now for decorative items:

* Select a mirror with no frame or a mirror with a small frame — this will make the room look larger and the mirror will reflect light farther in the room.
* Cover an entire surround with a mirror — this will create the appearance of a much larger space.
* Use fewer wall-mounted towel rods or rings — select a ring beside the sink to save space.
* Store extra linens nearby, but place out only a minimum at any one time.
* Place light fixtures where they will reflect light throughout the room.
* If you don’t have a window, think about installing a tube light to bring in sunlight.
* Find creative ways to add storage in walls.

Decorating ideas:

* Select lighter and brighter colors.
* Use glass block windows or frosted windows instead of curtains — it will make the room look larger.
* Use cover or paint design that draws the eye upward to make the room appear larger — either vertical stripes, vertical designs, or a border at the top of the wall.
* Use small shelves above and under sinks, toilets, etc. to wage storage and decoration.
* Keep color combinations minimalist — no more than two colors.
* Avoid clutter — don’t set decorative items around that are not necessary.
* Add luxuries in ways that do not use more of your space (massaging shower heads, spa tub, radiant floor heating, fogless mirrors, heated towel rods, fragrances, etc.)

In small spaces, simplicity is generally ideal if you want to create a feeling of spaciousness and elegance. Clean easy lines, lots of light, no clutter, and an eye to the necessary will help you create a very comfortable and luxurious small bathroom remodel.

Small Bathroom Lighting

31 August 2010 by admin

Small bathrooms might be those added under a stairway or in a spare closet. They might be for children, adults, or both. A small bathroom might be a guest powder room off the foyer or living room. One thing they have in common is that they are – small. Another thing they have in common is that they call for special lighting.

Small bathroom lighting is dependent, in part, on the use of the bathroom. One type of bathroom light fixture might convey a warm, cozy feeling for dinner guests. Another type of bathroom light fixture might make the small bathroom seem spacious – or wage light for reading while resting in a deep soak tub.

Warm and Cozy Lighting

You can make a small bathroom feel warm and cozy rather than claustrophobic by adding the right light fixtures. Suppose this is a small half-bath meant primarily for guests to “freshen up” before dinner. You’ve used small-patterned deep red and gold cover for warmth. What kind of light fixtures should this small bathroom have?

Try recessed, can ceiling light fixtures focused on work areas. Or use indirect lighting around the perimeter of the ceiling-wall junction. On either side of the mirror above the sink, add a surround sconce light fixture. Avoid massive surround sconces, or those that deform too far from the wall, as they will make the room look cluttered. Layering these two types of light fixture will give you warm, gracious lighting in a small bathroom for guests.

Bright Enough for Reading

If the small bathroom in your home has a soaking tub, or one used by children, you will want good lighting in the tub area. Most lighting above tubs and showers is diffuse lighting, which is fine for a swift shower or bath. Diffuse lighting is also good over-all lighting to soften the entire bathroom. However, if you want to read – or get paint off of a child – you might want brighter, more concentrated lighting. Use a focused flood or halogen light fixture on the surround above the tub.

Choose safe, moisture proof light fixtures for this area. “Make sure that your lamps are UL rated for break locations insuring safety,” states Todd Phillips, president of lighting manufacturer Quoizel.

Space Enlarging Lighting

You can never have too much light in a small bathroom, as long as you use it properly. Perhaps the ideal intent for small bathrooms is to start with indirect lighting around the ceiling for overall softness and warmness. Then think about these possibilities.

1. If your small bathroom has a window, use light-admitting, sheer curtains at the window. Add a shade that can be drawn for privacy.

2. Light shower or tub with separate wet area light fixtures, strong enough to permit simple individualized grooming, but with dimmer switches for atmosphere.

3. On either side of the vanity mirror, use warm fluorescent vertical surround sconces to wage even facial illumination. Place a halogen light above the mirror for cross illumination. Place these mirror surrounding light fixtures on a separate switch.

4. Run a linear light fixture along the vanity toe-space to wage a soft night light.

5. For a family use small bathroom, place a halogen or flood light near the toilet, focused as a good reading light. Install a separate switch.

With all of these light fixtures layered in a small bathroom, you will always have exactly the amount of light you need for any given task. Yet you can make it cozy with dimmer switches, innocuous with night lights.

Helpful Tip

Small bathroom lighting need not be garish or insufficient. You can have plenty of light or cozy lighting if you layer your light, and control it with separate and/or dimmer switches.

The kitchen is not merely a place to cook. Today, interior design ideas for kitchen have to encompass a whole lot of factors. The beauty of the kitchen is not only in its outwardly appearance, but also in the planning of space. With the proper division of space, an interior designer has to think about the required area, factors such as the position of the appliances and how to make it a totally well equipped kitchen in the saint doable design plan.

Therefore, before you approach the interior designer with your ideas, you must first be clear on your stipulations and priorities, which would enable you to find the right plan for the kitchen space. Some people like to paint pictures, or do gardening, or build a boat in the basement. Other people get a tremendous pleasure out of the kitchen, because cooking is just as creative and imaginative an activity as drawing, or woodcarving, or music. ~ Julia Child

If you are one of those who totally love to spend their time in the kitchen, as you xperiment with different ingredients and herbs and invent new recipes, then you are obviously interested in making your work area more delightful and interesting. Ever thought about having an outdoor kitchen? Well if you have made up your mind about having an outdoor kitchen or are contemplating the idea, this is the article that will help you make up your mind and finalize your outdoor kitchen plans.

Before building an outdoor kitchen you will have to ensure that your outdoor kitchen plan fits the legal constraints. Make sure you check the zoning stipulations in your country so that you can ensure that your outdoor kitchen is at a legal distance from the property lines. Even though a permit for the kitchen construction wont be necessary, you will have to acquire permits for the plumbing and electrical fittings.

Remember that an outdoor kitchen is not merely an outdoor barbeque station; it is a complete kitchen with all the grills, cookware, storage cabinets, a dishwasher, oven, and also the refrigerator! While making your outdoor kitchen plans make sure to pick a spot that is not exposed to too much wind, snow or rain. Shelter the spot adequately to wage shelter from the weather but keep it open enough, so that you can roast your delicious barbeque and bake your mouth watering apple pie, even when you can enjoy the sight of drizzles. Usually a patio area is the perfect spot for an outdoor kitchen.

A washing sink is a must for any kitchen. Ensure you have an adequately massive sink with undisturbed water supply. The height and the placement of the sink should be such that it is comfortable for the mortal who is cooking, to reach out to the sink for disposing used utensils. Plumbing work needs to be done for this and hence it would be a great intent to inform the plumber and hire his services with prior intimation. Depending on the space available, ncorporate other useful elements like a storage shelf to store your cookware, a rod with hooks to hang your pans comfortably.

In case the space and electrical fittings grant you, incorporate other electrical appliances like a refrigerator, or a blender to assist you while you are cooking outdoors. In case you can’t get enough electrical fittings, try and use the conventional grinding tools like a mortar and a pestle, it is stated that a puree of herbs made in a blender can never match the crude and mesmerizing aroma of herbs ground using the mortar and a pestle.

While designing the kitchen, make sure that you get the perfect countertop. It is advisable to get a countertop with inlaid grills for cooking. If you are planning to use an electric grill, the electricity connections need to be in place. Make sure that the counter top is wide enough and comfortable high for you to work in the kitchen. A barbeque will be a must-have for an outdoor kitchen, since outdoor cooking is nearly synonymous with barbeque parties.

In case gardening is also one of your hobbies then you can enhance your outdoor kitchen further. Wouldn’t it be a great intent to have home cooked meals with fresh vegetables and herbs from your very own garden? Yes, plant a vegetable and herb garden right next to your outdoor kitchen.

Every time you decide to cook, all you need to do is pick up some fresh veggies, and aromatic herbs from your very own garden, place on your apron and get started!Kitchens are the heart of a family. It provides meals, snacks, warmth, laughter, shared moments, disagreements, comfort and more. Your kitchen has been there for everyone in your family and you want to continue to make it a comfortable place to be. You still want to be healthy to update your kitchen to make it fit in with modern day décor.

How you do that depends on your individualized style and flair and also what meals you like to fix the most; Mexican, Italian and more. You can dress up your kitchen with what you like the most. Kitchens are difficult to design if there is no planning done beforehand. It always takes a moment to think about what kind of kitchen space is required and jot down all the things. For starters is the overall look itself.

A small kitchen can also look ideal, as well as a nice and large kitchen can turn into a confining space. Know what you would like in your new kitchen. This also includes the basic stove and the microwave. You must be sure whether it is the simple stove you require, a cook top, or a more elaborate cooking range. Then there are other appliances to consider. Make a list of the items that are really essential for your kitchen, then the items that you think might be necessary. Consult the list twice and remove all those items that you can do without.

Unnecessary items constitute as junk and take up lot more space. This also makes the kitchen look really cluttered. Counters and cabinets come next. How much storage do you need in your kitchen? Does placing a shelf over there looks good, or does it confine the whole appearance? These questions are necessary in order to figure out what you need the most.

You might need to read about storage ideas and get some storage tips before deciding.Visit a good store that has a good variety of appliances. You might need to replace some of your appliances for superior and more efficient ones. And you also can get an intent about newer products on offer. By having an intent of the items you need, you can also keep your budget under check. Never forget the lighting and ventilation.

These two things are most easily forgotten. A good exhaust artefact is must for each kitchen and it should be ensured that it is properly installed. Electricity outlets and their placement is also necessary. With so many handy electrical appliances around, proper sources of electricity make working in the kitchen an simple job. Whilst mood lighting is probably not necessary you will need good strong lighting so you can see what you are doing.

Consider the flooring. You don’t want to be installing carpet in your new kitchen, we once had a rental with carpet in the kitchen – not good. Think about all your options for flooring.Once you have all the necessary planning over, it is essential to decide who will do the actual designing. Even though the task can be finished without professional help, there are many benefits of having one.

Professional designers have the knack of doing things the right way. They have valuable recommendations regarding the overall outlook of the design. Also they can streamline the budget for you by selecting the most appropriate stuff for your kitchen. Getting your kitchen designed by a professional could be an additional expense, but the result can be really rewarding. So go ahead and plan out your saint kitchen space.

Green Bathroom Ideas

19 August 2010 by admin

The newest style of bathroom remodeling is the green bathroom. Green bathrooms not only help to save the environment but also help so save the owner money in the long run. This article can help give you some green ideas when it comes to bathroom remodeling.

Using natural light is the easiest way to begin your green design. If you have the option skylights are the ideal way to light your bathroom. Letting in natural light not only gives you bathroom a friendlier brighter feel but also eliminates the need for electric lighting. If skylights aren’t an option replacing bathroom windows with larger ones can also drastically help the lighting of your bath. When it comes time to plan the actual electric lighting aspect of your bathroom look into low voltage led lighting as an substitute to the conventional bathroom lighting. Installing timer switches is also a great way to ensure you save energy.

Another great way to save money is to switch from a hot water tank to a solar hot water tank of an inline heater. A solar hot water heater uses energy from the sun to heat your water saving energy and money. With the cost of these units starting around 00 dollars these are a great investment. The inline water heater gives you hot water on demand giving the added bonus of never being healthy to run out of hot water. Either of these alternatives are superior for the environment then the standard hot water tank.

There are a number of ways to help save water when it comes to your bathroom. Automated faucets save water by automatically turning themselves off after a certain amount of time. They are turned one by either a motion censor or near button, these are a must have if you have young children. Water saving shower heads can also cut your water usage down significantly. In the past water saving shower heads ruined water pressure and drizzled out water making them detested by many; however today’s water saving shower heads conserve water while still giving decent pressure.

Another great way to save water in your bathroom is through the use of water saving toilets. There are a wide variety of models on the market to select from the most favourite being the 1.6 congius flush. These 1.6 congius flush toilets are becoming somewhat out dated though. There are now 1 congius single flush toilets that are just as effective as the 1.6. There are also dual flush toilets on the market. These have a .08 congius flush and a 1.6 congius flush. They have been know to save a family of four over 10,000 gallons of water a year when compared to a conventional toilet. Pressurized toilets are another type of water saving toilet that has become more favourite in current years. There have also been great improvements in the designs of these toilets. They used a pressurized air tank to assist the flushing of the toilet allowing for a lower volume of water.

Saving water isn’t thing that makes a bathroom green. Buying recycled building materials is also part of designing a green bathroom. There are many types of bathroom vanities that are made from recycled glass that have an ultra modern look to them. There are also a variety of tiles on the market that are made from recycled material. Buying recycled building materials can help save you money and the environment at the same time.

No matter how serious your bathroom remodeling project is there are simple tiny ways to make your bathroom and home a tiny more energy efficient. These were just a few bathroom remodeling ideas to help you help the environment.

Bathroom Ideas, Including Bathroom Design Ideas for Beautiful Bathrooms

17 August 2010 by admin

Here are the ideal bathroom decoration ideas for your bathroom makeover project! Decorating bathrooms has never been easier, read on to find out how.

First, be sure to determine your overall budget and the scope of the project before doing anything else. This will eliminate additional stress and frustration as your bathroom makeover project is underway.

Once you have determined your overall project and budget, it is time to begin formulating your color and style palette, utilizing the bathroom decorating ideas and plans you might have been thinking about. Is there a defined decorating style in the rest of your home that will be carried through to the bathroom decorating project? It’s a good intent to be consistent with the style you have set for other areas of your home, even though in a bathroom you can ‘go down a different road’ as long as the basic design elements are kept consistent.

The same question applies to the color palette. Have you established a color palette of three to five colors in your home? If you have, choose at least two of those colors, whether primary or secondary, to use in your bathroom decorating project.

If you’re not sure what to do with color, here is a suggestion. Find a reputable paint store and work with the recommended palettes and color chips. There are many to choose from, so if you have a color or two that you are working with, you will have no problem finding a variety of recommended color palettes.

Now that you have your style and color choices narrowed down, here are your other considerations and bathroom decoration ideas:

1. Decide if you want to use bold colors on the walls or keep them neutral and use color as an accent. In most bathrooms you can go either way. If you are renting your home or are not sure about putting a lot of color on the walls, stick with a neutral shade and you won’t go wrong. Use a washable paint such as eggshell or possibly a semi gloss, even though you will get quite a bit of sheen with that finish.

2. Lighting is important in the bathroom for obvious reasons. Make sure you have enough and that at least one light is bright. Using a softer light such as a small lamp in place of a nightlight is great, but make sure your substitute sources of lighting are nice and bright!

3. You can substantially change the look of your bathroom with accessories, so here are some great bathroom decoration ideas – use some or all of them!

Change the mirror to create a new look. If the existing mirror is square or rectangular, think about oval if that will work in your bathroom. Use a mirror that has an interesting frame instead of just a plain or beveled edge.

If the woodworking is staying, change the hardware and choose something that you can coordinate with the towel holders, for example. This will create a pulled together, designer look. If your decor style is Shabby Chic or French Country, you might want to paint the cabinets.

Shop for accessories that have the color palette and overall design feel you are creating, but please don’t settle for the matching set of anything! You know, the toothbrush holder, soap dish, shower curtain and small wastebasket that have the same palm tree on them??? Don’t do it! Spend a tiny extra time looking for individual pieces that ‘click’, but don’t match. And, they don’t have to be new. You might find something awesome in another room of your home, a flea market, shopping online or a combination of all three. Take your time and be selective – you will be glad you did.

Think about storage for your bathroom makeover. If you have a linen closet, that’s great. If not, look for creative ways to store your towels, etc. I have used a nightstand from a bedroom set in the bath and it was great – The lower compartment was great for supplies, and I stored makeup and such in the top drawer.

Finally, remember that country is always at the forefront in the bathroom. Put rugs on the floor that are non-slip. You can find many great selections at any number of stores depending on your budget. Think twice about using glass jars, etc in the bath if there are small kids that will be using the bathroom.
